Behavioral Health and Wellness
Every child has problems with school at times. However, if your child is consistently struggling at school to master coursework, complete assignments on time, stay organized, maintain focus, and seems to be a “slow learner”, it might be time to consider testing for a learning disability.
Common signs of a learning disability include:
Difficulties with writing, reading, and math
Struggling to follow directions
Problems with focus or paying attention
Difficulty staying organized or remembering
Having a learning disability does not mean your child isn’t intelligent; rather, it means his or her brain mechanisms or “wiring” are different than other children’s, impacting how he or she learns, perceives the world, receives sensory inputs, uses technology, responds to feedback, stays on task, and more.
Common types of learning disabilities include:
Attention deficit disorder
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Language processing disorder
Auditory processing disorder
Visual perceptual/visual motor deficit
Impact of a learning disability on your child
Children with learning disabilities often experience emotions that include frustration, poor self-image, anxiety, and depression. He or she may experience delays in social development and skills. He or she may also have other conditions related to the learning disability, which require separate treatment, therapy, and medications.
Getting help early is a first step in the right direction. And it’s good news that there are a variety of interventions to increase the likelihood of your child’s success in school and in life.
At Empowered Learning Transformation Centers, our team conducts learning disability testing and develops a learning disability treatment plan individually tailored the specific needs of your child. This includes helping your child develop coping skills that build on his or her strengths.
Learning disability therapy approaches include:
Child cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or talk therapy
Sensory integration therapy
Our team works with other members of the care team that includes teachers, social workers, tutors, and others as necessary.
